Fostering Creativity and Concepts with a Site Visit
Bangkok, October 13 – Interior Design students from Raffles International College recently stepped outside the classroom for a site visit around the areas of the Emporium shopping Mall as part of their Creativity and Concept Development course. Led by Mr. Lonsai Kangkhao, Raffles’ interior design lecturer, the activity encouraged students to explore real spaces, gather inspiration, and see how everyday environments shape design ideas.
For this project, students followed a route from BTS Phrom Phong, through Benchasiri Park, and ended their exploration at Emporium Mall. Along the way, they observed the surroundings, recorded important details, and studied how people interact with different spaces. They also carried out site and client analysis to gain a better understanding of the project’s requirements and the environment they were studying.
To capture their observations, students used sketches, photographs, field notes, diagrams, collages, and presentation boards. They practiced mapping locations, analyzing spaces, and recording ideas that could later be developed into design concepts. Sharing ideas with one another also encouraged discussion and creativity, helping students build a strong foundation for their upcoming pavilion design project.
The site visit transformed classroom concepts into real experiences that students could see, feel, and understand for themselves. Such hands-on experiences enable students to connect design theory with real-world observation and gain a deeper understanding of the design process. Raffles International College continues to help students develop creative thinking, practical skills, and confidence while preparing for their future in the design industry.
